Cuarteto Casals has been a fixture on the world’s most prestigious stages since capturing First Prizes at the London and Brahms-Hamburg competitions. Formed in 1997 at Madrid’s Escuela Reina Sofía, the ensemble has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Philharmonie Berlin, Vienna’s Musikverein, and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, among others. Acclaimed for its stylistic range and refined artistry, the quartet recently released a celebrated recording of Bach’s Art of Fugue.

The quartet’s extensive discography on Harmonia Mundi and Neu Records spans early Spanish composers to modern masters like Ligeti and Kurtág. Known for using matched period bows for historically informed performances, Cuarteto Casals is also deeply engaged with contemporary music, premiering works by composers such as Francisco Coll, Mauricio Sotelo, and Elisenda Fábregas. Honored with Spain’s Premio Nacional de Música and the Medal of Honor from Reina Sofía, the quartet serves as cultural ambassadors for Catalunya and holds teaching residencies across Europe, including in Barcelona, Fiesole, and The Hague.

“Is there a typical Cuarteto Casals sound?  It is characterized by a maximum, extremely delicate penetration of the score and a multi-layered sound that always has something fluorescent, glassy.” – Alexander Dick, Badische Zeitung
